From Boomers to Generations Z and Y, crochet has more and more fans around the world, becoming one of the top, must-follow trends as we head into this year's vacation season. From tops and shorts to skirts, dresses, shoes and accessories, this traditional technique -- well known to our ancestors -- is this year once again making its way into women's closets, and onto social networks.
What would summer be without crochet? Since the beginning of the pandemic, and the rise of all things DIY, crochet is continuing to gain converts -- young and old -- to the point of inspiring new vocations on social media. And those less skilled with their hands, no longer hesitate to turn to specialized stores, as well as major fashion brands, or even luxury houses, to find 'THE' crochet piece that will make all the difference on the beach. Considered by some as the chicest style of the moment, crochet is well and truly the top trend of the summer -- something that many celebrities anticipated at the highly popular -- and no less trendy -- Coachella festival.
If bohemian chic didn't really find its place at this year's California festival, frequented by various celebrities over two weekends, crochet clearly made its way to the desert event. Influencers and models like Leonie Hanne and Gizele Oliveira, or stars like Vanessa Hudgens and Laura New, all stepped out in crochet outfits, with a focus on tops covered with flowers, skirts, swimsuits, and even bags adorned with messages, slogans and brand names.
In its latest "Summer Dressers" report, the fashion search engine Stylight* confirms the trend, noting that raffia and crochet bags saw a 112% increase in searches on its international platforms, and a 128% uptick on Google, from April 1 to 18, compared to the same period last year. And it's not just crochet accessories that are attracting attention, as crochet ensembles have also been gaining traction in recent weeks, with a 33% increase in search interest on Google. And it's clear that the trend will continue with the (massive) influx of crochet swimsuits as the summer months approach.
Stylight , which looked at the top ten trends for summer 2022, also reveals that orange and brown are among the colors that are buzzing the most this season, while zebra and tiger prints are a hit in terms of patterns. When it comes to accessories, platform heels will rule supreme as soon as the sun starts to shine, whether in the form of sandals or dress shoes. And given the younger generations' love for all things '90s and 2000s, the colorful microbead necklaces popular in these two decades will also be making a comeback.
