Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is open to joining Newcastle United in the summer, a report has revealed, with three key figures at St. James’ Park driving the transfer pursuit.

McTominay was linked with Newcastle during the January transfer window. However, Erik ten Hag did not want to sanction any major exits from his Man Utd squad at the time. Come the summer, though, and the situation could be different.

This season has seen a reduction in McTominay’s gametime. At the age of 26, he can’t afford for that to be the case for too much longer. Therefore, he may have to give serious thought to changing clubs for the first time in his career.

And according to a fresh update from the Daily Telegraph, he is attracted by the idea of moving to Newcastle.

Eddie Howe’s side have made significant progress on the pitch this season. They were recently beaten by Man Utd in the Carabao Cup final, but are still competing for European qualification.

To carry over their form into next season, though, Newcastle might need to make some signings again. With that in mind, McTominay is back on their radar.

According to the Telegraph, Howe has identified McTominay as a target who could improve Newcastle’s midfield. In addition, chief scout Steve Nickson and director of football Dan Ashworth believe bidding for him could lead to Newcastle adding another important element to their midfield.

It is a position that became deprived for the Magpies when Jonjo Shelvey left for Nottingham Forest during the January window. Theoretically, McTominay could come in as a reinforcement in the summer.

Man Utd asking price not yet clear

The report does not mention how much Newcastle would be willing to bid for the Scotland international, nor how much Man Utd want to raise by selling him.

McTominay is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, with the option of a further year.

But Newcastle have done their research on him over the past year and Howe seems to be pushing for the green light to sign him.

The Telegraph notes how the Newcastle manager tends to prefer deals for players with experience in the Premier League. McTominay certainly ticks that box after playing more than 130 times in the English top flight for Man Utd.

Newcastle could be good next step for McTominay

Indeed, McTominay might be a useful recruit for Newcastle. After falling down the pecking order at Man Utd, he may have a point to prove.

Although not a world-class player, McTominay has shown flashes of what he can contribute over the duration of his Man Utd career.

He could bring some new energy and experience to Newcastle’s midfield. Therefore, it is understandable why so many decision makers there think he would be worth bidding for.

Obviously, the price will have to be right, but Newcastle aren’t in the wrong to be considering a player like McTominay.
