Halloween is all about living in a fantasy world for a few hours, being silly, and acting like a carefree kid. The real joy of this day is pretending to be someone (or something!) you’re not! Because, let’s face it: Escaping from reality for a few hours is actually a cheap mental health break and a welcome respite from stress. Making your own costume is definitely half the fun because the only limit is your resourcefulness!

The first step to creating a memorable costume is picking a theme. Historical figures, characters from movies or TV shows like Friends, and book character costumes are good places to start thinking about the possibilities. Choose a theme that allows you to stretch your imagination. Look at lots of photos to get an idea of what your character wears, and see what you might already have in your closet or donate pile that could work or be adapted. Make a list of what you need to round out the look. You don’t have to buy everything; get crafty and create accessories from papier-mâché or upcycled cardboard, duct tape, plastic jugs, and craft paint.

Here are a few trendy ideas that you can make your own:

Astronaut

If you ever dreamed of being an astronaut, now’s your chance! With the historic launch of SpaceX in May with NASA astronauts on board, space flight is hot again. Start with white sweats and a long-sleeved tee, or a white jumpsuit. Add red trim, and purchase or make a helmet (papier-mâché, anyone?). Don’t forget the NASA logos, a U.S. flag, and name tag to complete your outfit. Ready for blastoff!

Tiger King

The Netflix show garnered a huge following and gave everyone plenty to talk about in 2020. Start with jeans, add a mullet and mustache, and get flashy with a blazer you can decorate yourself. Don’t forget your tiger sidekick!

Exhausted WFH Mom

Here’s one that’s relatable, and a cinch to pull off! You probably already have most of these items in your closet. Start with leggings, an oversized T-shirt (extra credit for stains!), and draw dark circles under your eyes. Throw your hair up in a messy pony and attach baby dolls to your leg or arm with an adhesive hook and loop product such as Velcro. Props include a coffee cup and laptop. Then act really, really tired. (Well, it's probably not an act!)

Empire Strikes Back (40th anniversary)

It’s the 40th anniversary of the Star Wars series blockbuster The Empire Strikes Back. Channel your inner Jedi by becoming the strong and sassy Princess Leia. Opt for the traditional white gown, and dress it up with your own ingenuity. May the Force be with you!

Flower Child

Embrace your inner hippie by donning bell bottoms, a long flowing wig (if your own locks aren’t long and flowing!), and plenty of blue eye shadow. This is a really fun costume to assemble and wear because you highlight your own personal taste and fashion sensibility. Groovy, man!
