Tom Cruise Hangs Off a Plane in Thrilling Trailer for “Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning ”

'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' hits theaters May 23, 2025

Tom Cruise is sprinting back onto the big screen as super spy Ethan Hunt.

The first trailer for the eighth Mission: Impossible film, titled The Final Reckoning, shows glimpses of Cruise's heroic IMF agent as he revisits the conflict that began in 2022’s Dead Reckoning Part One and continues to fight against the sentient artificial intelligence "the Entity."

"Our lives are the sum of our choices," Cruise, 62, wrote on Instagram as he debuted the trailer. "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. See you at the movies May 23, 2025."

Also returning for the next Mission: Impossible movie are Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff and Henry Czerny, all of whom appeared in the seventh film. That installment made $172 million at the domestic box office and earned the franchise its first Oscars nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

Among those joining the new movie are Nick Offerman, Bob Odenkirk, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham and Katy O'Brian. Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct after helming the Mission: Impossible films Rogue Nation, Fallout and Dead Reckoning Part One.

The eighth Mission: Impossible installment began filming in the U.K., Malta, South Africa and Norway in early 2022; production stalled in July 2023 due to the Hollywood writers and actors’ strikes and resumed in March 2024. The movie was originally called Dead Reckoning Part Two, but it dropped that subtitle in October 2023.

Cruise, also a producer on the films, was spotted filming action-packed scenes for the upcoming film in May in London, outside an invented Tube station called Trafalgar Square. In March, the Top Gun star was photographed running down a street in the capital wearing a black suit with an unbuttoned white shirt covered in fake blood.

Also among Cruise’s upcoming projects is a third Top Gun film, following the success of 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick
