When Tom Cruise isn't filming Mission: Impossible 7, he's practicing his drive, doing coin magic and discussing the time he bumped into former Russian premier Mikhail Gorbachev.

Well, his deep fake alter ego is at least.

A new TikTok account, deeptomcruise, is presenting mind-bendingly real videos of the Top Gun star, which are almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

Unless it is the real thing. We just don't know anymore.

Whoever it is, Cruise's face is precisely as it is in real life, with the voice mimicry truly down to a tee – the star's distinctive laugh is bewilderingly accurate.

It's worth noting that – per The Verge – TikTok's terms do not permit such things, the Ts and Cs noting that 'You may not impersonate any person or entity, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent you or your affiliation with any person or entity, including giving the impression that any content you upload, post, transmit, distribute or otherwise make available emanates from the Services'.

Such is the eerie realism of these clips, 'impersonate' doesn't quite do it justice, so whether this account will be up for much longer remains to be seen.

But the deep fake area is clearly here to stay, as the software becomes increasingly sophisticated.

Not so long ago, Back To The Future got the deep fake treatment, with Robert Downey Jr and Tom Holland replacing Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox.

The results were equally unnerving.
