Tokyo Streets Bustling Despite State of Emergency Ahead of Olympics

Tokyo recorded 727 new positive cases of COVID-19 as of July 19, just four days before the Olympic opening ceremony.

The Olympic Village had also reported its fourth positive COVID-19 case on Monday.

Local resident So Takano took a bike ride through the busy Kabukicho district on July 16 to document Tokyo’s nightlife which is under its fourth COVID-19 state of emergency.

Spectators were banned from entering Olympic venues, and major commercial facilities in Tokyo were required to close by 8 pm under the state of emergency rule which will be in place from July 12 to August 22. Credit: So Takano via Storyful
