Tokyo Olympic crowds urged 'pack less, wait less'

How exactly are the Olympics planning to protect fans, such as social distancing, at next year's rescheduled games?

On Wednesday (October 21) Reuters and other media were shown how, along with a simple message for fans:

"In English, pack less, wait less. Pack less, wait less. We don't' want to delay the excitement."

That was Tokyo 2020 security director Tsuyoshi Iwashita.

A raft of security measures have been tested this week.

At one media venue, organizers assessed various technologies to monitor the body temperature of spectators.

One test used thermometer strips placed onto the wrists of volunteers. They contain heat-sensitive liquid crystals and can immediately detect if the wearer has a fever.

Among the 40 scenarios being looked at was what to do if someone is seen forgetting to wear a mask while still moving other spectators smoothly through the inspection area.

Measures to enforce social distancing in queues, was also being assessed.

A decision is still to be taken by organizers on whether spectators will actually be allowed into venues to watch the action, which is due to start on July 23rd next year.
