See that big wall over there? Wouldn't it be cool if you could watch, say, The Godfather on it? At a size that dwarfs your TV? That's the fun of owning a projector; you can turn just about any wall into a theater-size screen (well, home theater-size, anyway). And getting started is way cheaper than you might think.
For example, for a limited time, and while supplies last, the TMY V58 720p projector drops to just $90 when you click the on-page $50-off coupon. It normally sells for $140, already a very solid deal. Even more amazing: It comes with a 120-inch portable projection screen.
That folding, anti-wrinkle screen can be hooked to just about any wall, or even something like your garage door for outside screenings. You'll have to provide power, though; this model doesn't have a battery like some other portable cinemas.
Similarly, you'll have to connect some sort of video source: a laptop, smartphone, game console, storage device or the like. Although the V58 supports Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity to those kinds of sources, it lacks any onboard apps (Netflix, etc.).
So what's the trade-off between this and projectors costing hundreds more? For starters, resolution: This doesn't deliver the razor-sharp 4K images offered by modern TVs. The V58's native resolution is 1080p — good enough for casual viewing, yes, but it'll start to look fuzzy at larger sizes.
Another important consideration: brightness. With just 200 ANSI lumens, this projector needs a room that's almost completely dark. And because it has limited keystone correction (just 15 degrees), you may have trouble finding the ideal placement to get a perfectly rectangular image. You'll need to be able to position it almost dead-center in front of the screen.
That's why I don't recommend this for an actual home theater. Instead, it would make a great option for kids, who are much more forgiving when it comes to things like brightness and image quality. Set this up for a bedroom or basement movie night, or connect it to the game console for super-big entertainment.
Indeed, this is merely a "fun" projector, one best suited for casual use — and one that definitely won't break the bank. Want something even cheaper? A slightly older TMY model, the V08, is on sale for just $63 with 30%-off coupon. It lacks Wi-Fi and tops out at 720p resolution, but is notable for its 4.5-star average rating from nearly 5,400 buyers. (The newer V58 earned 4.3 stars from around 230.)
