Tina Knowles remembers Beyoncé as a shy child who got bullied

"She was very shy and she got bullied a bit," Knowles recalled in a "Vogue" interview.

Girls, they run the world...but sometimes they start off a little more reserved.

Tina Knowles, Beyoncé and Solange's mother, shared some favorite memories of her daughters (including honorary child, Kelly Rowland) in a new video interview she shared to Instagram. Most notably, she remembers Beyoncé as a shy child who didn't come out of her shell until she was propelled to stand up for others.

"She was very shy and she got bullied a bit," Knowles said in the Vogue interview. "But the day that she stood up for someone — she didn't stand up for herself, but she stood up for them —I'm getting emotional talking about it, and I couldn't have been more proud of her."

Knowles also spoke of her younger daughter Solange's early tendencies toward activism. "Solange was her signing a petition in school," Knowles named as her favorite memory of her daughter. "She was only in 5th grade and she was out getting petitions signed, so she's always been an activist."

Though Knowles only has two biological daughters, she often claims Kelly Rowland, who was a member of Destiny's Child alongside Beyoncé and Michelle Williams, as her third child. Rowland came to live with Knowles and their family when she was only 11 years old.

"Kelly was always this kid that just tried to protect everybody," Knowles remembered. "I have a memory of her with her best friend Barbara and her being a mediator, and just being this little peacemaker."

Knowles also shared a caption with the video, explaining that her approach to parenting is to honor the differences in children and celebrate what makes them unique. "Each child is different!" she wrote. "But all so special. I believe kids are born with their personalities. My three girls all handled things very differently. Learn their personalities and respect the individuality. Never compare the negatives , always praise the positive differences and pay attention to the things that you can brag on about them. They love it and it encourages positive behavior."

Now a grandmother to Blue Ivy and twins, Rumi and Sir, Knowles remains a fierce protector and promoter of her family. Only last fall, she praised Blue Ivy's stage debut during Beyoncé's Renaissance tour. And she also took haters to task on her Instagram for criticizing Beyoncé's platinum hair style at the premiere of the Renaissance concert film.

"I know that she is going to be pissed at me for doing this, but I am fed up! " she wrote on social media. "This girl minds her own business. She helps people whenever she can. She lifts up and promotes Black women and underdogs at all times."

Perhaps, in some ways, Beyoncé is still that shy child in her mom's eyes, requiring her protection.
