“Three Wiser Men and a Boy”’s Paul Campbell Says His Mom Gave Him a Bag of His Teeth: ‘I Immediately Threw Them in the Garbage’ (Exclusive)
"She's like, 'Do you want these?' " the Hallmark star, 45, told PEOPLE
Paul Campbell is sharing how his mother took childhood nostalgia a little too far.
The actor spoke exclusively with PEOPLE alongside costars Tyler Hynes and Andrew Walker to promote their new Hallmark holiday movie Three Wiser Men and a Boy. While discussing the holiday season, Campbell, 45, revealed that his mother recently gave him "a bag of teeth."
"I'm like, 'What is [this].' She's like, 'Oh, these are your teeth, from when they all fell [out],' " he recalls. "She's like, 'Do you want these?' "
His answer? An emphatic no. "I immediately threw them in the garbage," he admits, prompting Hynes, 38, to ask, "What's wrong with you? Why would you do that? That was a gift from your mother!"
"They were my own teeth," Campbell replies, before Walker jumps into the conversation to defend Campbell's mom.
"Think of the time that she spent to keep those smelly things around," Walker, 45, quips.
While Campbell may not appreciate the fact that his mom held onto his lost teeth all these years, he does give her credit for saving — and continuing to treasure — one particular keepsake from his youth.
"One year I made her — and she's still got it, and it's the ugliest — I feel like it was inspired by a Tim Burton movie," he began, continuing on to say, "It's a little jewelry box, but it's this sort of weird angular — it's like a little bureau and the drawers pull out. And she's still got it, and it's filled with all of her jewelry to this day," he says.
"Every time I go in [her house], I'm like, 'Oh man, that's bad,' " he said.
Nonetheless, Campbell says he's still "very proud" of the gift, which he says he made when he was about 13 or 14 years old. "The macaroni necklace was right next to it," he jokes, while also sharing with PEOPLE that he handmade a gift for his mom every single Christmas as a kid.
These days, Campbell is busy making special childhood memories with his own son, Kingston, whom he shares with his wife, Lorie Metz. The Falling Together star tells PEOPLE he loves spending as much time as possible with his 8-year-old boy. "That brings me comfort and joy. I give him a little hug and that grounds me," he notes.
When it comes to parenting, Campbell says he "learns something new every day."
Following the success of 2022's Three Wiser Men and a Baby, Campbell, Walker and Hynes are now reprising their roles in the much-anticipated sequel. The story picks up five years later with the three Brenner brothers stepping in to save the day when the director of Luke's son's school musical suddenly steps down.
The siblings also find themselves navigating their complicated feelings about their mom beginning a new romantic relationship. "In true Brenner brother fashion, they are all in for a Christmas they will never forget," per the movie's official synopsis.
"People seem to be excited for the second one," Campbell tells PEOPLE. "Hopefully we can live up to that. We definitely bring the silliness for sure."
