Thousands in Turkey protest free-falling lira

The lira tumbled as far as 13.45 to the dollar, plumbing new all-time lows on Tuesday for an 11th straight session, before trimming some of those losses on Wednesday.

Anxious Turks struggled to keep up with a bewildering collapse, as dozens protested the government during a demonstration, with police dragging some on the ground as riot police closed off streets, Reuters footage showed.

The lira recovered as much as 7 percent from a historic slide to record lows a day earlier triggered by President Tayyip Erdogan's defense of rate cuts, but volatility and steep price rises still worried consumers and investors.
