Thousands gathered in Uttar Pradesh, India, on Wedneaday 10 November, to celebrate Chat Prayagraj. Chhath is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival historically native to the Indian subcontinent and more specifically to the Indian states of Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, as well as the southern parts of Nepal. It has become popular with the Nepalese hilly community in recent years, thanks to the influence of the southern immigrants. Prayers during Chhath Puja are dedicated to the solar deity, Surya, to show gratitude and thankfulness for bestowing the bounties of life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes. Some devotees also perform a prostration march as they head for the river banks.
