STORY: Vendee Globe leader Alex Thomson became the first to cross the equator and into the South Atlantic on Wednesday (November 18) as he continues to lead the pack in their race around the globe.

Thomson reached the equator 9 days 23 hours and 59 minutes since setting sail from Les Sables d'Olonne, France last week.

Thomson led the pack through the doldrums, which have been kind to most sailors this year, and was aimed towards Brazil's eastern coast.

By Wednesday afternoon, race organizers estimated Thomson was about 79 miles ahead of Thomas Ruyant of LinkedOut in second place.
