The Creek Fire in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains had grown to more than 135,000 by September 8, and thick smoke was hampering some rescue efforts, the Fresno Fire Department said.
Just how thick that smoke was can be seen in this video, taken south of Big Pine, and showing the view of the mountains from the highway occluded by a red haze that extends across the plain.
“Rescue efforts were unsuccessful, military pilots tried valiantly to land but heavy smoke conditions prevented a safe approach,” the Fresno Fire Department tweeted. Efforts would be made “to evacuate the trapped people in Lake Edison and China Peak using night vision,” they said.
One death was reported from the fire. Cal Fire said 65 structures had been destroyed, and that several thousand more were threatened. Credit: @fit_gb via Storyful
