Thick Smoke Above Northern New Mexico as Midnight Fire Continues to Spread

Thick smoke plumes billowed into the sky above northern New Mexico as the Midnight Fire continued to grow, officials said on Saturday, June 11.

This footage was captured by Mary Ellen Leonard, who said she filmed it near her home in El Rito on Friday afternoon.

Structure protection measures were put in place on Friday night as the fire approached private lands, officials said.

By Saturday morning, the Midnight Fire grew to 3,500 acres and was zero percent contained, according to Carson National Forest. The cause is still under investigation. Credit: Mary Ellen Leonard via Storyful
