Then and now: Beirut's scars, a year after the blast

Most streets are now clear of rubble and many buildings are being renovated. The wrecked grain silos in the port - an iconic image at the time - still look as they did soon after the blast, with many other buildings in the area still in a state of collapse.

The disaster was a caused by a massive stockpile of ammonium nitrate, which had been stored unsafely for years at the port. The explosion ripped through the city, killing more than 200 people and wounding thousands.
