Revealed: The 2 NHS trusts where 20% of staff aren't fully jabbed

About one in five staff at two NHS trusts in England are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19, NHS data has revealed.

Less than 80% of the staff at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and Barts Health NHS Trust in London have had two doses of a COVID jab.

It comes amid speculation the government could make COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for all NHS staff.

The proportion of staff who are fully vaccinated across all NHS trusts in England as a whole is 89%.

There are 16 trusts in England where at least one in six members of staff are not fully vaccinated.

All of them are in London and Birmingham.

Theses are the trusts, and the proportion of staff who are double jabbed.

1. Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust – 79.52%

2. Barts Health NHS Trust – 79.68%

3. North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust – 80.17%

4. Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust – 80.28%

5. Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust – 80.35%

6. East London NHS Foundation Trust – 80.58%

7. Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – 80.80%

8. Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – 81.21%

9. Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust – 81.26%

10. King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – 81.35%

11. Whittington Health NHS Trust – 81.56%

12. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust – 81.78%

13. Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust – 82.04%

14. Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust – 82.24%

15. St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – 83.16%

16. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust – 83.19%

No trust in England has full coverage, despite NHS staff having access to the vaccines earlier than almost all of the rest of society.

The five with the highest coverage are:

1. Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust – 94.40%

2. West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust – 94.41%

3. Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – 94.54%

4. Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – 94.57%

5. Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust – 94.76%

Health secretary Sajid Javid said on Monday he is “leaning towards” making the jabs compulsory for staff in England, with around 100,000 NHS workers not fully vaccinated.

Javid insisted he had not yet made a final decision, but the move would mean the situation for NHS staff in England is broadly in line with the requirement for care home workers.

The British Medical Association (BMA) said the government should consider the legal, ethical and practical implications of mandating vaccines.

BMA council chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul said they supported the vaccine rollout but said the "the threat to staff who refuse the vaccine of losing their jobs is also of grave concern".

He said even though vaccination rates among NHS staff was very high losing any amount of the workforce would be "devastating" with 93,000 vacancies currently unfilled.

Dr Nagpaul said the government should explore options for those who are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons or may refuse and recommended redeploying staff, letting them work from home, or giving them better PPE.

He said without a proper impact assessment it would be "irresponsible" to press ahead with mandatory vaccines.
