Thanksgiving 2022 store hours updates: Walmart and Trader Joes will be closed on the holiday
As Thanksgiving approaches, retailers have had to decide whether they plan to stay open during the holiday or close their doors for the day.
In years past, it was not uncommon for big name stores to welcome customers on Thanksgiving, or open on Thanksgiving evening, hours before the official start of Black Friday.
However, the pandemic has seen the practice change over the last three years, with many retailers that used to open on the last Thursday of every November now shut for the holiday.
Walmart and Target are among the retailers that have announced permanent closures on Thanksgiving moving forward.
But that doesn’t mean that the closures have become the norm across the board, as there are many retailers that will remain open this year on 24 November.
Starbucks is one retailer that plans to welcome customers on the holiday, while certain supermarkets, such as Whole Foods, will also be open this Thursday.

Unlike a number of supermarkets, Trader Joe’s will also close on Thanksgiving, according to the company’s website.
The stores will resume normal operating hours on Black Friday.

Lowe’s will also join big name retailers in closing its doors on Thanksgiving this year. The company is expected to open stores at 6am on Friday.

Retailers under the TJX Companies umbrella, which include TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra and HomeSense, will be closed on Thanksgiving.

The majority of Apple stores in the US will be closed on Thanksgiving. However, Apple will keep its flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan open on the holiday.

Macy’s is included in the list of retailers that will not be opening their doors this Thanksgiving.
However, the retailer will open on Black Friday with extended hours, with Macy’s stores open the day after Thanksgiving from 6am to 11.59pm.

Kohl’s also confirmed on its website that its stores will not be open on Thanksgiving.
“Last year, Kohl’s served millions of customers both in store and online throughout Black Friday week, and we look forward to delivering that same incredible experience to our customers again this year,” the retailer said. “Customers looking to shop Kohl’s on Thanksgiving Day will be able to shop on Kohls.com and in the Kohl’s App. “

Best Buy, which used to open its stores around 5pm on Thanksgiving Day, has also confirmed on its website that stores will not be open on the holiday this year.
However, the company notes that “almost all Best Buy retail stores open at 5am on Black Friday”.

Ulta Beauty will be closed on Thanksgiving as well. The cosmetics retailer said it made the decision with its employees in mind.

While there are certain supermarkets that will be open on Thanksgiving, Costco has announced it will not be one of them.
The retailer closes on a number of federal holidays, including Christmas, Memorial Day, and New Year’s Day.

Bed Bath & Beyond will be closed on Thursday 24 November as well, after the company announced last year that it would close its stores on Thanksgiving so employees “can be with friends and family during the important holiday”.

Target will also be closed this Thanksgiving, a decision made after the retailer also closed on the holiday in 2020 and 2021.
The announcement that the company had made the closure permanent was shared last year by Brian Cornell, Target’s CEO, who said: “What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard.”

Walmart stores across the country used to remain open on Thanksgiving. However, the practice changed in the beginning of the pandemic, when the retailer closed on the holiday in 2020 and 2021.
In an update shared with the Today show last month, Walmart’s chief executive announced the change would be permanent going forward, and that being open on Thanksgiving was “a thing of the past”.
