SINGAPORE — The licence of popular Thai cafe Tuk Tuk Cha in Jurong Point mall has been suspended for two weeks from 2 to 15 April 2024 over a cockroach infestation.

The eatery in Jurong West had accumulated 12 demerit points within a year, and was fined a total of $800 for two offences of failing to keep its licensed premises free of infestation, said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) in a news release on Tuesday (2 April).

According to The Straits Times, cockroaches were found in the cafe. All food handlers working at the suspended premises will be required to re-attend and pass the Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) Food Safety Course Level 1 before they can resume work, said the SFA.

In addition, the licensee is also required to ensure that all food hygiene officers working at the suspended premises re-attend and pass the WSQ Food Safety Course Level 3.

The SFA said it takes a serious view of these offences and reminded food operators to observe good food and personal hygiene practices at all times, and to engage only registered food handlers.

It added that it will not hesitate to take firm action against anyone found to be in violation of the Environmental Public Health Act.

Members of the public who come across poor food safety practices in food establishments are advised not to patronise such outlets and provide feedback via the SFA's online feedback form or call the SFA's Contact Centre (6805-2871) with details for follow-up investigations.

Suspension of Serangoon outlet in 2020

According to the SFA's news records, Tuk Tuk Cha's Nex outlet in Serangoon Central also had its licence suspended for two weeks between 30 November and 13 December 2020.

The outlet had accumulated 18 demerit points over a year, and was fined a total of $1,200 for three offences of failing to keep its licensed premises free of an infestation.

There have been several food incidents involving cockroaches recently. In one such incident, a customer found a live cockroach crawling on her boxed Ondeh Ondeh cake from Cedele's Waterway Point outlet on 31 March. The brand has since apologised.

Another woman found a cockroach in her soy milk drink from Mr Bean on 18 March.
