The duvet cover just might be your bed’s unsung hero; after all, it’s the most visible item on your bed and you’ll be sleeping under it for (hopefully) eight hours each night. It also protects your comforter (regardless of whether you prefer down or down-alternative) so you won’t have to wash it as often. Needless to say, a good duvet cover should look neat on your bed, feel comfortable, and be easy to clean.

The Good Housekeeping Institute's Textiles Lab evaluates bedding for durability and performance features like fabric strength, wrinkle resistance, pilling resistance, and shrinkage and appearance after laundering. We also have our panel of consumer testers rate the softness and overall feel in a blind comparison. The fabric used in picks below were top performers in our bed sheet tests, plus the covers have helpful features that makes attaching them to a duvet insert easier. Here are the best duvet covers to buy for your bed:

Best Overall Duvet Cover

Brooklinen Luxe Duvet Cover

A top performer in our test, this fabric proved to be strong and pill-resistant, it washed well with minimal shrinkage, and consumer testers said the cotton sateen weave felt smooth. The downside was a wrinkled appearance right out of the dryer, but that's typical of 100% cotton weaves. The brand uses features like larger buttons and longer duvet ties to make it easier to get the comforter attached. On top of that, there’s a generous year-long return period so you can make sure you love it, and with thousands of five-star reviews we expect that you will. Available sizes: Twin, Full/Queen, and King/California King

Best Cooling Duvet Cover

Slumber Cloud Stratus Duvet Cover

Even better: Our testers loved the feel of the cotton/viscose fabric, and they rated it softer than other bedding in a blind comparison. Many even said they personally wanted to switch to it at home. The fabric did shrink noticeably in the wash, but it was strong and otherwise held up to our Lab’s durability testing. Available sizes: Full/Queen and King/California King

Best Luxury Cotton Duvet Cover

Wamsutta Pimacott Damask Stripe Duvet Cover Set

Many luxury bedding fabrics claim to be made of premium cotton fibers like Egyptian or pima, but there's usually not enough evidence to validate these claims. This fabric is unique because it's DNA-tested to ensure you're getting the real deal. It was strong and pill-resistant in our tests, plus our panel loved how soft the cotton sateen fabric felt. Parachute's linen fabric in particular s tood out in our tests for being stronger and more resistant to pilling and shrinkage than other styles.
