Leave it to Tessa Thompson to supply a lesson in edgy polish. At the 2024 Met Gala, the Creed star stunned in her black-and-white floral Chanel gown, which she paired with a choppy flipped bob and silver-tinged cat eyes.

“I wanted to create enough drama to stand up to the depth of her black dress, but at the same time retain a feeling of luminosity and softness,” explains her makeup artist Alex Babsky of the overall vision.

Naturally, Thompson’s gaze was the focal point. To capture a ‘60s vibe, Babsky took a three-prong approach to the eyes. First, he laid down the base using Chanel Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer in Noir Black. Then he layered a darker shadow, Chanel Ombre Essentielle Multi-Use Longwearing Eyeshadow in Bois Noir, over it. Finally, he blended a wash of Chanel Ombre Essentielle Multi-Use Longwearing Eyeshadow in Gris Paris—a “much lighter, powdery gray”— to create a “veil of softness.”

To offset the cool and moody eyes, Babsky chose peachy shades for the cheeks (Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sun-kissed Powder in Medium Coral) and lips (Chanel 31 Le Rouge Satin Lipstick in Rouge Croisière) to “add enough color to keep everything looking cheery,” he says.

Just as Thompson’s makeup was full of depth, so was her “retro and playful” bob crafted by her hairstylist, Lacy Redway. “We added velvet ribbons seen throughout the dress in the hair, and we cut tiny bangs but made them piecey with flips and curls to frame Tessa’s face.” The source of inspiration? Classic Chanel codes and vintage photo of Linda Evangelista, says Redway.

With another epic Met Gala moment under her belt, Thompson continues to be the master of chic beauty combinations. And this time around, she was definitely the quintessential Chanel girl.
