UPDATED: It’s finally here. After months of feverish anticipation, U.K. cinema goers will be able to buy their tickets for the year’s most anticipated movie, “Tenet.”
Tickets for the Christopher Nolan thriller, which will release in U.K. cinemas on Aug. 26, are set to go on sale on Wednesday morning at chains such as Showcase and Picturehouse and the BFI Imax, all of whom have teased ticket availability on social media. Major chains Vue and Cineworld have also confirmed that tickets will be sold from Wednesday. Odeon has not yet commented on its plans.

The film’s release couldn’t come at a better time for U.K. cinemas, which have been largely starved of new releases during the pandemic. The weekend box office saw Russell Crowe thriller “Unhinged” holding fast onto the top spot with a gross £117,633 ($154,000), but figures were down 34% on last week despite screen counts rising from 243 to 270.
Cinemas in England were allowed to reopen from July 4, but only AMC Theatres-owned Odeon opened doors at select locations at that point. Both Cineworld and Vue delayed their planned July 10 reopenings, with Cineworld pushing until July 31 and a cautious Vue staying closed until Aug. 7.
Warner Bros.’ decision in late July to launch “Tenet” in 70 overseas territories from Aug. 26 ahead of the U.S., as reported exclusively by Variety, has been welcomed by global cinema operators, who were nearing the end of their tether this summer with the studios’ ever-shifting release schedule in response to the pandemic.
