Manchester United have missed out on the signing of goalkeeper Yann Sommer as the 34-year-old has joined Bayern Munich instead, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Sommer first emerged on Man Utd’s radar in August 2022. Reports put him on a list of several keepers being considered by Erik ten Hag to replace David de Gea.

Man Utd’s pursuit of Sommer ramped up towards the start of the January transfer window. After it emerged he was ‘dreaming’ of a move to Old Trafford, the Red Devils began talks with Borussia Monchengladbach to sign him.

However, Bayern Munich soon became the frontrunners to capture Sommer. Their sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, confirmed the interest on January 6 by saying: “I don’t like talking about players of other clubs, but Sommer is definitely a topic, of course.

“We are considering our options and will make a decision in the near future.”

The Bavarians are in need of a new number one following Manuel Neuer’s long-term injury. The Bayern legend broke his leg while skiing in December and will resultantly be out for the remainder of the season.

After beginning talks with Gladbach for Sommer recently, Bayern have now reached an agreement over his transfer to the Allianz Arena.

As per Romano, it is now a ‘done deal’, with the journalist giving the move the full ‘here we go’ treatment. Bayern will pay Gladbach an initial €8million (£7m), plus an extra €1.5m (£1.3m) in potential bonuses.

Man Utd-linked star agrees contract elsewhere

Sommer has sorted out personal terms with Bayern, too. His contract will last until summer 2025. He just needs to pass his medical before he can sign the deal.

At 34 years of age, the Swiss would never have been a long-term keeper solution for Ten Hag. But given his standing as one of the best keepers in the Bundesliga, he would have been a good signing to provide De Gea with competition and backup.

Instead, Man Utd have had to bring in Jack Butland on loan from Crystal Palace. He has joined on a six-month loan, with Man Utd having the option to sign him permanently once his Palace contract expires in the summer.

Ten Hag still needs to find his top-class replacement for De Gea, though. Diogo Costa, 23, is one potential solution. He is already the number one for Porto and the Portugal national team.

Alternatively, Man Utd could opt to go for someone with Premier League experience. According to a recent report from The Independent, Man Utd are joining Chelsea and Tottenham in casting admiring glances towards Brentford’s David Raya.

The Bees will be happy to sell Raya if a bid worth between £15m and £20m arrives. However, Man Utd may have to pay more than this if a bidding war with Chelsea and Spurs begins.

It is interesting that there are so many keeper transfer links with Man Utd. De Gea was in fine form last night against Palace, pulling off a world-class fingertip save to deny Odsonne Edouard.

But the Spaniard still has the odd terrible mistake in him. In the FA Cup third round, De Gea shockingly let a cross go between his legs. And this allowed Conor Coady to tap home. Man Utd won the match 3-1, but instances like this will show Ten Hag why he needs a new keeper to join.

Meanwhile, Man Utd have found out Spurs’ new asking price for Harry Kane.
