Ten Hag told to ‘hit’ controversial Man Utd forward after two incidents in utterly bizarre piece of advice
Erik ten Hag has been given a dubious piece of advice on how to handle Alejandro Garnacho whose actions have courted more criticism of late.
Garnacho, 20, has been among Manchester United’s brightest sparks this season. The Argentine has forced his way into Ten Hag’s thinking after lodging nine goal contributions in 28 matches.
What makes the lively winger’s record all the more impressive is the fact the vast bulk of his outings have come from the bench. As such, Garnacho is actually averaging a goal contribution every 116 minutes.
However, Garnacho has occasionally courted headlines for the wrong reasons since breaking through at Old Trafford.
Stand-in captain Bruno Fernandes previously scolded Garnacho for displaying a poor attitude during pre-season.
Fernandes said: “On the tour he didn’t have the best attitude that he should have had, and that’s why he didn’t get his chances until now.
“He’s getting his chances because he’s training better, having a different attitude and deserving his chances.”
More recently, Garnacho was spotted mocking Pedri’s glasses celebration after Man Utd dumped Barcelona out of the Europa League. While that ordinarily wouldn’t be of interest, Pedri had missed the second leg through an injury sustained in the first leg against the Red Devils.
Garnacho also wrote on Instagram “the big team passes the round” after Barcelona were ousted in what was viewed by some as Garnacho being a sore winner.
Now, speaking to TyC sports, former River Plate player and manager, Nestor Gorosito, has given Ten Hag a truly bizarre piece of advice on how to handle Garnacho.
Gorosito earned 19 caps for Garnacho’s Argentina during his playing days and insisted he’d “hit him with an open hand” if one of his children behaved like Garnacho.

Garnacho taken to task
“You always have to give priority to the group, that’s the most important thing,” said Gorosito.
“The rules are clear and everyone has to follow them, from the youngest player to the oldest, and the coaching staff.
“Look for respect, try to bring him to your side, so that he doesn’t do crazy things, I don’t know players who don’t adapt, not through a stick but by convincing him, showing him what’s good and what’s bad.
“He (Garnacho) is going to make mistakes because he’s 20 years old and that’s when he has to do it, it’s part of life.
“We have to understand that it’s a different generation to ours and that kids who talk rubbish on the internet have 70 million followers, they don’t pay anywhere, they have German cars, for talking rubbish, it’s another generation and I think it’s rubbish.
“If it’s one of my children, I’d hit him with an open hand on the back of the head, but that’s how it is.”
Ten Hag has taken a sterner approach to the playing personnel than previous managers, most notably Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
He wasted little time ridding the club of its Cristiano Ronaldo problem and benched Marcus Rashford against Wolves on December 31 after the red-hot forward’s bout of lateness.
However, we don’t expect the Dutchman will be taking Gorosito’s advice on board any time soon. It doesn’t take a genius to work out laying hands on a young player still finding his way in the game is not the way to go.
