Erik ten Hag’s stance on Cristiano Ronaldo has been revealed by Fabrizio Romano as the Man Utd star is currently “working at the best level”.
Ronaldo returned to the Red Devils last summer after he initially looked likely to join their rivals Manchester City from Juventus.
The forward and David De Gea were among very few players who performed well for Man Utd last term.
The 37-year-old scored 18 goals in the Premier League and he also shone in the Champions League. He was unable to guide United to a successful season though as United finished sixth.
It emerged earlier this summer that he wanted to depart the club so he could play for a team competing in the Champions League.
This came to no avail though as no substantial bids for Ronaldo arrived as he entered the final year of his contract at Man Utd.
Ronaldo missed much of pre-season and he claimed that he missed their tour of Thailand and Australia due to personal reasons.
Ten Hag has handled Ronaldo’s situation pretty well as he always insisted that he was not for sale.
The Portugal star has been a substitute in recent weeks as United’s performances and results have picked up. They have won four games in a row and this includes victories over Liverpool and Arsenal.
Ronaldo is likely to come into United’s starting XI for their Europa League opener against Real Sociedad on Thursday night at Old Trafford.
Romano has now suggested that Ten Hag plans to “involve him more and more in the coming weeks”:
“After a long summer of speculation, I wanted to provide an update on Cristiano Ronaldo after he failed to get a transfer away from Manchester United,” Romano wrote for Caught Offside.
“It is true that Ronaldo missed a lot of pre-season, and while this was primarily for personal reasons, it is also true that his agent Jorge Mendes spoke to several clubs about a deal.
“Still, all sources now tell me that Cristiano is working at the best level, he has never created a problem in training sessions and is respecting all the decisions of Erik ten Hag.
“Ronaldo has spent a lot of time on the bench, but Manchester United know that Ten Hag wants to involve him more and more in the coming weeks…to know more about the future, we will have to wait.”
