Wout Weghorst has openly admitted that “it won’t get much nicer” for him in his career than playing for Man Utd after his surprise move to the club in January.

Man Utd signed Weghorst on loan from Burnley during the winter transfer window after a similar spell with Besiktas. After only scoring two Premier League goals before, it was a move that raised eyebrows for some.

But Erik ten Hag needed a target man he could trust after losing Cristiano Ronaldo midway through the season. Consequently, he put faith in his compatriot.

Since joining Man Utd, Weghorst has started all eight of his Premier League appearances, plus six games in domestic cups and four in the Europa League.

Having only scored twice from his 18 appearances so far, though, Weghorst is still facing questions from his critics about whether he is good enough for Man Utd.

The 30-year-old has already insisted this week that he feels he must be doing something right if he is still playing so often.

But he has also confessed to Voetbal International that he doesn’t expect to end up anywhere better than Man Utd, who have given him the “best step” of his career.

Weghorst said: “You notice from everything that it is the absolute top. That is the Premier League anyway.

“I had already experienced the level and intensity of the competition at Burnley. And then you come to United and you notice how big that club really is. How many people are involved, how it lives with the fans.

“You have to adopt that. Find your way and deal with it. I do that by mainly being myself.

“This has been the best step of my career. United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that’s where I play now. It won’t get much nicer.”

Weghorst: Look where I am now

The Netherlands international added: “I have always said that my absolute dream is to get the most out of my career. To reach my ceiling.

“You can always strive for more or even better or even more beautiful. But look where I am now: with Manchester United, as a starter, at Old Trafford. I am back with the Dutch national team and I have a beautiful family. I am very happy.”

Weghorst might have to find a new club when his loan spell at Man Utd ends. His contract with Burnley, though, is still due to last until 2025.

Man Utd, for their part, will likely be turning their attention elsewhere, towards an option better suited for the long term.

On that front, one of their potential targets has dropped a “we will see” tease amid claims Ten Hag has lodged a £100m bid for him.
