Erik ten Hag has insisted that Man Utd drawing with Tottenham was a good result given how his side performed over the 90 minutes.

Man Utd looked to be on course for a useful win when they went in at half time against Tottenham two goals to the good. Jadon Sancho opened the scoring in the seventh minute with his fifth Premier League goal of the season, before Marcus Rashford doubled the advantage just before the break with his 16th.

However, Tottenham produced a stunning fightback in the second half. First, Pedro Porro halved the deficit with an outside-of-the-boot volley.

A glaring miss from Eric Dier with a free header then looked like something Spurs might rue. Yet they went on to equalise when Son Heung-min finished as the final 10 minutes approached.

Ultimately, both sides had to settle for a point as the game finished 2-2. Although Tottenham have been in more turmoil recently, Man Utd’s form has become inconsistent all of a sudden.

For example, they also gave up a two-goal lead in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla, before losing the second leg comfortably.

Man Utd are still in the top four after the result, with Tottenham obviously being unable to close the gap with them. However, Ten Hag will have to fix some recurring issues in order to make his side more convincing.

Ten Hag told BT Sport: “Of course, when you are 2-0 up, then you are a little bit disappointed when you draw. That’s quite obvious. We have to take that.

“We had the chances after the 2-1 to score the 3-1, which we didn’t. Then we concede a goal. But after all in this week, I think 2-2 is a good draw.

Ten Hag: ‘We were not that good’

“We had to score the second goal and it came just before half time, but to be honest, they could also make the equaliser just before half time before we scored.

“We were not that good over 90 minutes. Also not in the first half, we didn’t play brilliant for me. We were up 2-0, and then we had to think after half time, we had to score another goal.

“After half time it was the same as before half time. We lose control and we conceded the goal. We could see it coming.

“I already prepared the subs but I was a little bit too late.”

On what his side should do differently, Ten Hag said: “Manage the game, keep the ball – they gave so much easy balls away – have a good defensive organisation, which we didn’t always have.

“With the goal it was quite obvious, we didn’t block the crosses and you have to be proactive there. We have to come out to block the shot. With the second long ball, we didn’t squeeze out. It was so easy for them to score a goal then.”

Man Utd are next in action on April 30 when they host another side aiming for European qualification in the shape of Aston Villa.
