Teen mom who dumped baby appears in New Mexico court

Alexis Avila went before a judge as the judge heard evidence on whether she should remain in custody awaiting trial on the charge of attempt to commit First Degree Murder (2nd-degree felony).

Prosecutors say hours after he was born, his mother, 18-year-old Alexis Avila, tossed the newborn into a trash dumpster.

Six hours later, people going through that trash dumpster in Hobbs, found the baby in a bag and called for help. The baby is currently at a hospital in Lubbock, Texas.

All of it was caught on camera, including, police say, Avila's license plate.

Officers say when they went to her home, she told police she didn't know she was pregnant until she gave birth.

Then police say she changed her story saying she found out she was pregnant the day before the baby was born. That she panicked and didn't know what to do.
