Team SMG officially sign MidOne, kpii after making it to SEA DPC
Southeast Asian organisation Team SMG (Still Moving Under Gunfire) officially announced on Monday (12 April) that they have added Yeik "MidOne" Nai Zheng and Damien "kpii" Chok to their Dota 2 roster, after the team qualified to the lower division of the Southeast Asian regional league for the second season of the 2021 Dota Pro Circuit (DPC).
MidOne joins Team SMG after parting ways with two-time The International (TI) champions OG in mid-March while kpii joins after departing from Filipino organisation TNC Predator in early March. MidOne will be the team's carry player while kpii will be the offlaner.
The rest of Team SMG's roster is comprised of Malaysian players Muhammad Ammar “neah666” Rasulli, Tue "ah fu" Soon Chuan, and Southeast Asian Dota legend Chai "Mushi" Yee Fung. Neah666 is the team's midlaner while ah fu and Mushi are its support duo.
Team SMG, co-founded by Singaporean celebrity JJ Lin, qualified for the Southeast Asian regional league's lower division following a tumultuous second round of the open qualifiers from 8-9 April.
Team SMG initially lost their chance at qualifying for the DPC after they were defeated by Team D in the quarterfinals of the qualifier.
However, Team D was disqualified from the qualifier on 9 April. It was found that Cheng "vtFαded" Jia Hao left his previous team, Team Mystery, after the transfer window had already passed to play with Team D in the open qualifier.
It was also revealed that vtFαded played in Team D's match against Team SMG using a smurf account, or an account registered under a different name.
As a result of Team D's disqualification, Team SMG was given their spot in the next round of the qualifier and vtFαded was banned from competing in the DPC until the conclusion of TI10 in August.
Team SMG proceeded to sweep the proceeding rounds of the qualifier in order to secure their spot in the Southeast Asian regional league's lower division.
Team SMG join the likes of 496 Gaming, South Built Esports, Cignal Ultra, Galaxy Racer, Army Geniuses, Team Mystery, and Motivate.Trust Gaming in the lower division, where they will be fighting for promotion to the upper division. Team SMG will make their DPC debut on 15 April against Galaxy Racer.
Team SMG first entered the Dota 2 scene back in January. However, the team was unable to qualify for the both the upper and lower divisions of the Southeast Asian regional league in the first season of the DPC.
