Taylor Swift image manipulated in pro-Trump posts

An image circulating online purports to show Taylor Swift holding a sign promoting the false claim that former US president Donald Trump won the 2020 election. But the picture has been manipulated; the original shows the pop star at an American football game without a political sign.

An account called "Il Donaldo Trumpo," which has previously shared manipulated visuals, posted the photo January 30, 2024 on X, formerly Twitter.

"Trump won," the supposed sign says. "Democrats cheated!"

Conservative influencers shared the same image elsewhere on X and other platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and Telegram.

"Is this real?" commentator Benny Johnson said in a January 30 X post.

Another X user who shared the picture said: "She finally came around!"

Swift, who has been attending American football games since she started dating Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, has become a target for right-wing conspiracy theories and misinformation ahead of the 2024 US presidential election. She has been critical of Trump in the past and said she regrets not opposing him in 2016.

AFP has previously debunked claims that Trump won the 2020 election, which President Joe Biden clinched with 306 electoral votes (archived here). There is no evidence fraud affected that outcome.

The image of Swift has also been doctored.

Using a reverse image search, AFP found the unaltered photo shared September 25, 2023 on Instagram (archived here). Additional keyword searches show it was taken by photographer David Eulitt for Getty Images on September 24 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri (archived here).

The Chiefs beat the Chicago Bears that Sunday -- the first time Swift attended a game to support Kelce.

The Il Donaldo Trumpo account on January 31, 2024 posted another image of Swift supposedly holding the same pro-Trump sign -- but it is also doctored.

The Associated Press took the original photo January 28 after the Chiefs won the AFC Championship game in Baltimore, Maryland (archived here).
