Taraji P. Henson 'Thrilled' to Return to Host 2024 BET Awards: 'Looking Forward to Celebrating My Peers'

The Oscar nominee and Golden Globe-winning actress hosted “culture’s biggest night” back-to-back in 2021 and 2022

Three time’s the charm for returning BET Awards host Taraji P. Henson.

The Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress, 53, is back to host “culture’s biggest night” this year, BET announced on Monday, June 3.

“I am thrilled to be returning as the host of the BET Awards for the third time,” Henson shared in a press statement. “I am also looking forward to celebrating my peers and the impact of our culture on entertainment.”

The six-time BET Award winner returns to the annual ceremony following her emcee stints in 2021 and 2022. This year, she’ll host the event live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30.

“Taraji is a phenom, known for her vibrant personality and charisma, and we are excited to welcome her back to host Culture’s Biggest Night, BET Awards, the ultimate celebration of Black creativity,” Connie Orlando, executive vice president Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET said in a statement. “We are equally as thrilled to have so many incredibly talented performers join us, standing on culture’s biggest stage to deliver an unforgettable night.”

Ahead of her 2022 BET Awards hosting gig, Henson talked to PEOPLE about preparing for the spontaneity that came with her role while exclusively teasing her show-stopping wardrobe — which included 14 outfit changes.

"You have to be ready for whatever — it's like live theater,” the former Empire star explained. “And especially when they're filming it live, there's really no room for error.”

She added of her “show must go on” attitude: "I love live theater. It's so exciting. I love it. You have to be witty, you have to have a lot of stamina and you have to think quick on your feet. Because like I said, things can change at a drop of a dime. You got to be ready to go with the flow."

This year’s BET Award nominees include Henson’s The Color Purple co-stars Danielle Brooks, Fantasia and Halle Bailey, all of whom are up for best actress. Co-star Colman Domingo is also up for best actor, while The Color Purple itself is nominated for best movie.

The film’s nominations follow Henson’s 2024 NAACP Image Awards win for outstanding supporting actress in a motion picture for her stellar portrayal of Shug Avery.

At this year’s BET Awards, performers GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey and Victoria Monét are all set to hit the main stage, with more to be announced. R&B icon Usher will also be honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, saluting his “ever-growing musical legacy” as a legendary performer and artist.

The BET Awards is the “ultimate platform to showcase the best, brightest, and most beautiful aspects of the Black experience – honoring the present and future of Black music, creativity and sportsmanship, by celebrating the culture and being a driving force for social change.”

The 2024 BET Experience will kick off ahead of the awards show from Thursday, June 26 through Sunday, June 30 with a performance lineup that includes Cardi B, Davido, Gunna, Sexyy Red, The Roots, Common, Queen Latifah, Jungle Brothers, and many more electrifying acts.

The 2024 BET Awards airs live on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET/ PT.
