Tan France, fashion expert for the Netflix series Queer Eye, sat down with Yahoo! Lifestyle to talk about his new eyewear collection with EyeBuyDirect, consisting of twenty contemporary designs designed to complement a range of personalities and looks.

“[You’ll want to consider] what style is appropriate for your age, what style is appropriate for your skin tone, and what style is appropriate for your face shape,” he says.

To provide a better sense of what you should be looking for, he’s putting his rules into practice by styling this year’s Oscar nominees. Read on as he selects the perfect pair of peepers for some of the actors to watch this season.

“He has a heart-shaped face so, to balance that out, I think it’s wise to go with something more rectangular,” says Tan.

He recommends the Coxon, an aviator style.

“The frames that you choose are going to help balance out your face shape if you choose wisely so you’re going to want to go for the relative opposite of what you have,” he adds.

According to Tan, Leonardo DiCaprio and the Sequence were made for each other.

“They’re a lot more square-shaped to balance out the roundness of his face. If you have a round-shaped face, I definitely would not go for a round frame,” he advises.

When it comes to Kathy Bates’ round-shaped face, Tan only has eyes for the Morla, a budget-friendly tortoise style that transcends time.

“This is a statement frame. As far as I’m concerned, it is appropriate for any age,” he says.

Renee Zellweger

For Renee Zellweger’s oval shape and fair skin tone, Tan recommends the Attitude, a cat-eye style, in Clear, which he describes as being between a rectangle and a square shape.

“An oval shape doesn’t really do an aviator shape very well. What you want to do is balance it out with either a wider frame or a more rounded frame,” he explains.

Cynthia Erivo

It’s also a clear choice for Cynthia Erivo, for whom he would style with the Chillax frame, ringing in at under $20.

“I love a more rounded shape on an oval face shape. If you have a darker skin tone, you can pull off any color,” he advises.

Joaquin Phoenix

“Joaquin has a square-shaped face so we’re going to go with something rounder, and I will always love a metallic,” says Tan, who recommends the Daydream ($32) in a Brown Golden finish.

“He also has dark brown hair, which I think looks lovely with gold.”

Charlize Theron

While Tan makes it clear it’s hard to imagine any accessory making Charlize, who has a square face shape, look better than she already does, he would opt for the Prism ($70).

“Prism isn’t quite square. It’s not quite round. I love this color Chestunt for someone who has a paler skin color and lighter hair color,” he gushes.

Scarlett Johansson

“Scarlett has a diamond-shaped face so I would go with something that’s really going to soften up those lines – something more rounded and with a point of interest,” Tan says of his dazzling cat eye pick.

In this particular case, he’d opt for the Pink shade. “I love this color on someone who has a lighter skin tone and blonde hair.”

From red carpet to real life, Tan points out that going from a simple style to something bolder can be a bit jarring so you’ll want to ease into it. “Your eyewear is an extension of your outfit as far as I’m concerned. Why wouldn’t you put as much attention into choosing that as much as the rest of your look?” he says.
