Many of us would remember Tamagotchi as a handheld, egg-shaped device with an 8-bit virtual pet on the tiny screen. It has been 25 years since its first launch, and Tamagotchi has come up with a new product for this special anniversary: a smart watch version of Tamagotchi!

Instead of being carried around as a keychain, the new device, called Tamagotchi Smart, can be worn on your wrist. It comes in two colours: Mint Blue and Coral Pink. There is also a 25th anniversary limited-edition White version, which you can get a chance to purchase only by participating in a lottery.

Since it's a wearable, the Tamagotchi Smart comes with a pedometer to track your steps. It also has a microphone and touch screen to simulate the act of talking to and touching a pet. Like its predecessors, the more you interact with the virtual pet, the better your bond will be.

The owners can also purchase TamaSmart Cards — each priced at 1,100 yen (about S$13) including tax, sold separately — to access more potential pets, foods, accessories, designs, and mini games. There are currently two kinds of cards available: the blue-coloured Rainbow Friends and the pink-coloured Sweet Friends.

Scheduled to be released on 23 November 2021, Tamagotchi Smart has a retail price of 6,380 yen (about S$78) including tax. There will be 10 characters — depending on how you raise it — in Tamagotchi Smart, namely Mametchi, Poptchi, Awamokotchi, Kuchipatchi, Gaogaltchi, Pyueltchi, Wawatchi, Tuyopitchi, Milktchi, and Karapatchi.
