Armed Taliban fighters were seen guarding entrances into the airport and manning checkpoints, as they tightened control of the area, preventing locals from coming near the airport.
Gunfire was heard at the airport on Saturday, with tear gas also seen rising from the area. One witness noted that crowds by the airport have thinned out with an increase in Taliban checkpoints.
U.S. forces are now in the final phase of their evacuation from Kabul and just over 1,000 civilians inside the airport remain to be flown out before troops are withdrawn, a Western security official in the Afghan capital said on Sunday.
