Taliban Fire Tracer Rounds to Celebrate US Withdrawal From Afghanistan

The United States military announced the completion of its withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of evacuations from Kabul on August 30.

Footage shared by the Asvaka News Agency in the early hours of August 31 shows tracer rounds lighting up the night sky over Kabul. In a Tweet accompanying the video, the agency said the Taliban were “celebrating end of the evacuation of international troops led by US.”

Other footage from an LA Times reporter on the ground shows the Taliban at the airport firing rounds.

The commander of United States Central Command General Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr said the military mission to evacuate citizens, foreign nationals and vulnerable Afghans ended on August 30, adding that since August 14, more than 79,000 civilians were evacuated from Hamid Karzai International Airport, making it the “largest non-combatant evacuation in the US military’s history”.
