Taiping to receive national-level Asean Clean Tourist City Standard award
Taiping, a town of many firsts, continues to ink its name in the history books as it is set to receive the national-level Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Clean Tourist City Standard (2024-2026) award.
Taiping Municipal Council president Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir said the town had fulfilled the criteria set, adding that the presentation ceremony will be held next year.
“This is the latest recognition, especially for the Taiping community and to tourism,” said Khairul Amir during the council’s full board meeting this morning.
“This, once again, affirms Taiping Municipal Council’s ability to develop Taiping into an environmentally friendly, holistic, and sustainable tourist destination.”
The heritage town, located in the state of Perak, was named the Best Muslim Friendly Nature Destination, in conjunction with the World Islamic Tourism Awards 2023 on Sept 15, and received the Sustainable City Award 2023 during the state-level World Town Planning Day celebration on Nov 25.
In addition to housing the nation’s first museum, prison, and magistrate’s courts, the country’s first railway line was established between Taiping and Port Weld. Taiping was made the administrative capital of Perak in 1877. It was only in 1937 that Ipoh was named the Silver State’s new capital.
The town celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2024. The ‘Program Semarak Taiping 150’, to be held on New Year’s eve and Jan 1 at Dataran Warisan Taiping, will kickstart a series of year-long events to celebrate the anniversary.
At the full board meeting, Khairul Amir also highlighted the council’s joint effort with the Rotary Club of Taiping, OCBC Bank, and Aulong assemblyman Teh Kok Lim, to install 29 solar LED lights along the walkway at the Taiping Lake Gardens.
“The installation was done in phases, along 700m of the walkway, with the first phase involving seven lights, and the second phase involving the remaining 22 lights. This will help reduce the carbon footprint and save on electricity and maintenance costs.
“The brighter lights will also enhance security in the area, especially at night,” he added.
