Taika Waititi doesn't mind if Marvel finds a new director for “Thor 5”: 'I won't be involved'
"We're in an open relationship," Waititi said of the MCU. "If they want to see other people, I'm happy for that. I'd still get back into bed with them one day."
Taika Waititi is inviting the world into his open relationship with Marvel.
The Thor: Love and Thunder director recently shared the intimate details of his future with the MCU, which may or may not involve another outing with Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder. While the latest adventure from the buff Avenger certainly left the door open for more, Waititi has so much on his plate, that he doesn't mind if the franchise looks elsewhere for a director.
Responding to rumors that the studio is indeed developing a fifth Thor movie, Waititi told Business Insider, "I wouldn't know if that's accurate," adding, "I know that I won't be involved... I'm going to concentrate on these other films that I've signed on for."
Waititi was previously tapped to direct and co-write a new Star Wars film, a live-action Flash Gordon remake, and an adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky epic space-opera, The Incal. He also told the outlet that he plans for his adaptation of the acclaimed Kazuo Ishiguro novel Klara and the Sun to be his next movie.
"So that's six, seven years gone," Waititi summed up. "I'd imagine another Thor would be a lot sooner than that. But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris."
With a laugh, he added, "I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We're in an open relationship, and it's like, if they want to see other people, I'm happy for that. I'd still get back into bed with them one day."
In July 2022, on the heels of Love and Thunder, Waititi told the outlet that both he and Hemsworth were surprised when the film ended with a post-credits title screen promising Thor's return. He added, "I would definitely do [another] one, but only if Chris did it. But it would need to be something surprising and unexpected for me to want to do it."
As for Thor himself, Hemsworth told EW earlier this year that while nothing is official, he is open to returning "if an audience wants to see it, and if there's something that we believe is exciting and fun."
Hemsworth added, "I've loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don't have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable." That being said, he doesn't want to play the role for so long that people "roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character."
