SZA’s Bug Manicure at the iHeartMusic Awards Isn’t for the Faint of Heart
The singer debuted a manicure featuring realistic bug designs
SZA’s new manicure might make your skin crawl.
For Monday night’s iHeartRadio Music Awards, the singer, 34, donned a manicure featuring realistic-looking bug designs.
Courtesy of an LA-based nail artist who goes by @puttheminacoffin on Instagram, SZA’s nature-inspired look consisted of a French manicure adorned with different types of bugs such as ants, ladybugs, a dragonfly and a grasshopper. On one of her nails, the white French tip was replaced with a monarch butterfly wing.
“🪲🐞🐝🦂📿🙏🏾got new bugs 🥹,” the SOS singer captioned an Instagram carousel that included snaps from her night out. For the award show, she wore a long-sleeve marigold dress with a plunging neckline, accessorizing with thong sandals and a handful of necklaces at varying lengths.
SZA’s waist-length curls amped up the drama even more and the look was complemented by her signature bronzy, contoured makeup.

The Grammy winner’s Instagram caption seems to point not just to her latest manicure but her longtime fascination with insects. In a 2018 interview with Dazed, she opened up about being “really into bugs.”
“I’ve always been into nature, always been into categorizing s—,” she told the magazine. “I was always into outside. Like always trying to categorize leaves and rocks and s—. Bugs though, that’s a new comfort. Because I think once I got older, something about bugs became less like cool and more like ‘You gon’ crawl under my skin and lay eggs and Imma die’.”
She went on to explain that certain nature shows made insects seem scary, but her perspective has since changed.
“Now I’m really into bugs,” she said. “They have a purpose, I totally understand that. And they’re beautiful.”

The singer also shouted out her “favorite bug page,” Insecthaus_Adi.
“He’s the largest exotic bug dealer in Germany,” she said. “In Europe, actually. His posts are like art. It looks like fashion. He actually ended up doing a collaboration with Gucci, randomly. But I had been following him for so long before then, but everything is so beautiful and super cinematic. Once you follow him, it shows you mad other people who are like that, and then now you’re just in this world of bugs and art.”
SZA took home three awards at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards; R&B song of the year for her hit “Snooze,” R&B Album of the Year for her sophomore album SOS and R&B artist of the year. In February, “Snooze” won best R&B song at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
