Syrian Opposition Flags Fly in Idlib as Crowds Mark 12 Years Since Start of Civil War

Thousands of people in opposition-held northwestern Syria gathered on Wednesday, March 15, to mark 12 years since anti-government protests spiraled into the country’s continuing civil war.

Footage by Sumer al-Youssef shows a crowd of people waving opposition flags in Idlib. They can be heard chanting, “The people want the fall of the regime.”

A violent crackdown by the government followed widespread protests in March 2011, culminating in war.
