The Sony movie had surprising staying power at the box office, where it’s grossed more than $200 million globally off of a $25 million budget. It originally released on Dec. 22, 2023, and received a Valentine’s Day re-release in 2024 with extra footage.
In the movie, Sweeney and Powell star as Bea and Ben, who have a meet-cute moment quickly sour after one date. However, they serendipitously run back into each other at a mutual friend’s wedding in Australia. To make each of their exes jealous, Bea and Ben, who secretly can’t stand each other, pretend to be madly in love at the wedding. In true rom-com fashion, their fake romance slowly turns into something real.
Sweeney recently spoke to Variety at SXSW for her upcoming horror movie “Immaculate,” in which she executive produces and stars in, and discussed the surprise success of “Anyone but You.”
“I get chills just talking about it. We are all so beyond grateful and ecstatic that it has been loved to the degree that it has been loved,” she said. “Seeing people shut off the outside world and feel all the emotions we wanted them to feel while we were making it, then leave the theater singing and dancing and wanting to fall in love — that is what the movie theatergoing experience is supposed to ignite inside you.”
