This year marks the centennial of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Susan. B Anthony, along with other remarkable women, played a crucial role in this monumental step towards gender equality. Soon you'll have a new way to pay homage to the notable suffragist’s early life because her childhood home is getting renovated.

Located in Battenville, New York, Anthony’s brick home was built in 1883 by her father. Anthony lived in the Greek Revival style house from the age of 6 to 19. According to the Times Union, the house has major water damage. It also has a moisture issue, causing black mold and fungi to grow in the floors and walls.

Though the state Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation bought the foreclosed home in 2006 for $1 at auction, it hasn’t done much to restore the home. But this year, which happens to be the 200th anniversary of Anthony’s birth, the agency plans on putting $700,000 towards renovating the house. The money will go towards repairs, drainage improvements, and mold abatement.

A significant amount of the funding was secured by Sen. Betty Little and Assembly member Carrie Woerner because they both believe that Anthony’s childhood home is worth preserving and that restoring it could be a major tourist draw for rural Washington County. “I’m happy to see it happening,” Sen. Little told the Times Union. “It’s a significant building and we can’t let it sit there and get dilapidated. We have to take pride in it.”

Want to celebrate Anthony’s life right now? You can visit the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House in Rochester, New York. It was her home has an adult and served as the headquarters of the National American Woman Suffrage Association when she was its president.
