Supermarkets busy as Shanghai eases long lockdown

STORY: Long queues were seen outside bustling supermarkets with the city of 25 million people, set to officially emerge from its lockdown on June 1. Still, most shops, restaurants and businesses remain shut and a work-from-home regime is still in place.

After being mostly cooped up at home for eight weeks, 25-year-old local resident Bi Wei said she came out with her friend to enjoy fresh coffee. "Although there are still many shops on the road that remain closed, I find this kind of experience very luxurious."

Shanghai reported 338 new locally transmitted infections for May 25, the lowest since mid-March and a far cry from the tens of thousands seen at the peak of its outbreak in April.
