Supercell Looms Over Lubbock in Stunning Timelapse Video

A menacing supercell storm drew the gazes of stormchasers, meteorologists, and residents in Lubbock, Texas, on Monday evening, May 17, as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued tornado warnings and urged people to seek shelter immediately.

This timelapse footage, shot by Karin Ann Slyker near Lubbock-Cooper High School at around 8 pm, shows the storm rotating alongside mammatus clouds.

A tornado warning was issued for Lubbock at around 7.40 pm, and remained in effect until 9.55 pm. Minutes after the warning was issued, the NWS reported that a funnel cloud had been spotted. A short time later, torrential rain and hail “the size of golf balls” was falling across the city, the weather service said. Credit: Karin Ann Slyker via Storyful
