Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the biggest selling fighting game of all time, so it's no surprise that the latest fighter announced for it is from the biggest selling overall game of all time: Minecraft!

Legendary director Masahiro Sakurai announced today (October 1) that you will be able to play as four characters from Mojang's behemoth; Steve, Alex, Enderman and a Zombie.

Note that these are just different skins and names for the same fighter, just like Pikmin's Alph is just an alternate look and name for Olimar.

Whichever version of the warrior you play as, you'll be able to fight using your trusty pickaxe, throw TNTs, ride away in a minecart and don a pair of wings to fly about.

Sakurai said that Nintendo approached him about the idea of a Minecraft fighter, so that bit wasn't difficult, but actually programming the fighter was quite a challenge.

Steve/Alex/Enderman/Zombie is/are the second fighter revealed from Super Smash Bros Ultimate's second Fighters Pass, following the announcement of Min Min from Arms back in June. Four more characters have yet to be revealed.

While plenty of people predicted Crash Bandicoot (who has a new game out tomorrow) or Dante from Devil May Cry, the sheer popularity of Minecraft means this reveal has gone down a lot better than Terry Bogard from dormant Final Fight series, or Byleth being the 4 millionth representative from Fire Emblem.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is out now on Nintendo Switch. The Minecraft fight doesn't currently have a release date.
