Sunway Berhad’s property division has been a frequent fixture on the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards (Malaysia) winners list since the event launched back in 2014.
Major achievements over the years include the coveted Best Developer (Malaysia) award at the second Property Guru Asia Property Awards regional grand final in 2012, as well as a couple of big wins in the Central and Northern residential categories for Sunway Montana and Sunway Wellesley at the 2014 edition of the Malaysia event.
This year’s instalment, however, welcomed a first for both the Group and Awards programme.
In a milestone for the industry, the editorial team of PropertyGuru Property Report, the event’s official publication, named Sarena Cheah, managing director of the property division of Sunway Berhad, the 2020 Malaysia Real Estate Personality of the Year – the first woman to receive the honour in the Awards programme’s history.
The prestigious recognition pays tribute to her vision and dedication in spearheading one of Malaysia’s leading master community developers. During Cheah’s tenure, the company has expanded its footprint across Malaysia and beyond, whilst bolstering its philanthropic profile and technological capabilities.
Cheah also launched Sunway’s first real estate investment trust, which is rapidly becoming one of the largest of its kind in the country’s retail sector.
“Every day, the team at Sunway Property takes on the most pressing challenges of our time and that is to build sustainable cities and communities in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that are practised across the world,” she said upon receiving the award. “This is because we see urban cities as the world’s biggest challenge; but at the same time, that is potentially also our greatest solution.”
“It really puts a smile on everybody’s faces that is our greatest joy in being a ‘Master Community Developer.’”
Since its inception, the Group’s property division has built up an enviable portfolio of integrated developments throughout the country.
Its flagship township, the award-winning Sunway City, is an 800-acre mixed-use project that features an extensive mix of residential, commercial, leisure, hospitality, retail, education, healthcare and industrial developments.
Indeed, the success of Sunway City has laid the foundations for its business model to be replicated at Sunway City Ipoh and Sunway Damansara.
The division’s latest integrated township will be its largest to date. Set across 1,800 acres, the ongoing Sunway Iskandar in Malaysia’s rapidly expanding southern economic corridor, will upon completion, be home to six core precincts — The Capital, The Parkview, The Marketplace, The Lakeview, The Riverside and The Seafront.
In addition to its vast township portfolio, Sunway has been behind a series of successful stand standalone developments. These include Kiara Hills, Sunway Palazzio, Sunway Vivaldi, Sunway SPK Damansara, Sunway Montana and Sunway Eastwood.
Building on the success of its overseas developments in Australia, China and Singapore, plans are already afoot to establish further ventures in the Asia Pacific region.
Back on home soil, meanwhile, the group is pushing ahead with its latest integrated developments in the central region, Sunway Velocity and Sunway Velocity Two, situated close to the heart of Kuala Lumpur city centre.
