Sun halo spotted in Singapore - here are some photos

SINGAPORE – If you had taken a look at the sky during midday today, chances are you would have spotted a sun halo — a halo that ringed around the sun.

Spotted across Singapore today, the bright ring of light is not a common sight in Singapore. The National Environment Agency (NEA) shared in their Facebook post that sun halos here “tend to be covered by low to mid-level clouds.”

This optical phenomenon typically occurs when high-level clouds are blown over the island from the immediate surroundings under favourable wind conditions. These thin high-level clouds, made of ice crystals instead of water droplets, cause a refraction of light, forming faint coloured rings encircling the sun.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was one of those who had seen the sun halo today. He had tweeted a photo of the halo captured at Gardens by the Bay, asking if his followers caught “this beautiful sight?”

Albirex Niigata Football club had also shared a photo of the sun halo from Jurong East stadium after their training.

Many users took to social media to share their sun halos photos, from beautiful rainbow-hued ones in East Coast park to brilliant halos nestled amongst HDBs.
