Graham Potter was “disappointed” with losing against London rivals Tottenham, as he thought his side were performing well until a goal which “sums up” where Chelsea “are at”.

Chelsea came into the London derby having won just once in their last 10 games in all competitions. What’s more, they’ve failed to beat a London rival the last two times they’ve faced one, drawing against Fulham and West Ham United in back-to back-games on February.

Aston Villa’s win yesterday put them level on points with Chelsea. As such, a Blues win would have seen them go three points clear of the 11th-placed side, but it wasn’t to be against a strong Spurs outfit.

Potter’s side looked positive in the opening stages. They had a fair amount of the ball and were not lacking in the amount of attempts they had on goal.

The biggest moment of the first half came when Hakim Ziyech was shown a red card for appearing to strike Emerson Royal in the face.

In one of the more redeeming pieces of refereeing in the league this season, Stuart Attwell decided to send the forward off after a consultation with VAR, before viewing the incident himself and changing the card to a yellow one.

Chelsea went behind in the early stages of the second half, when Oliver Skipp’s powerful effort from outside the box was enough to beat Kepa Arrizabalaga; the midfielder’s first ever senior Spurs goal.

Harry Kane doubled Tottenham’s lead in the 82nd minute, turning the ball in as it landed at his feet from a corner for his 17th goal of the season, in turn moving another goal closer to Wayne Rooney in second place on the all-time Premier League goals list.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Potter coined Chelsea’s loss “disappointing,” despite feeling the game was even.

“It was a tight game. It was even first half. We were probably the better team for the first 20 minutes and then they came into it,” he said.

“Overall we were happy enough with our performance and then the start of the second half has made it really difficult for us. Once you are one nil down they can defend a little bit deeper and with more numbers and play on the counter.

“We huffed and puffed without doing enough to score but overall it is a disappointing loss for us.

“You can feel the desire of the players to turn results around but sometimes you go through moments where you have to suffer.”

Chelsea have now scored just one goal in their last six games in all competitions. They’ve conceded five goals in that time, and Potter felt Spurs’ opener was endemic of their struggles at the moment.

“It sums up where we are at. We don’t get the first contact and then a save and then a not great clearance. There wasn’t too much in the game but those key moments are not going our way,” he added.
