Strikes in Paris Continue Into Night as Unions Oppose Pension Reforms

Demonstrators gathered into the night in France’s capital amid nationwide protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s contested pension reform, which would raise the retirement age from 62 to 64, the interior ministry said.

Footage captured by Instagram user @benjaminsg_ shows demonstrators gathered at Place de la Nation, located in the eastern part of the city, on Thursday night. According to a city website, the area is known to be a prominent point for Parisian demonstrations.

Similar protests were seen in cities including Lyon, Marseille, Rennes and Nantes throughout Thursday.

On Thursday evening, French Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin said that the protests were a “fundamental right” of the people, but said it was the priority of the police to ensure they took place as safely as possible. Credit: @benjaminsg_ via Storyful
