Strictly Come Dancing dancer Kai Widdrington has spoken out about romance rumours with AJ Odudu, admitting they wanted people to think there was something going on between them.

The couple sparked questions about their relationship off the dancefloor after performing a fiery Argentine Tango on Saturday night that ended with them almost kissing.

But pro dancer Widdrington has said he told TV presenter Odudu that if they could convince viewers they were in love, it would mean they were doing their jobs properly.

The pair appeared on spin-off show Strictly: It Takes Two on Tuesday, where host Rylan Clark-Neal asked: "Can we settle a few scores here please? I’ve known AJ for many a year now, I know she can’t lie to me, what’s going on?"

But Odudu stayed quiet, letting Widdrington answer the question while she smiled.

Widdrington said: "We said this right, and I said this to you, I said if people react like this, then it means we’re doing something right, because that’s the way the dance should be danced.

"It was a very passionate song, a real fiery piece, and very intimate, and that’s what we wanted, and that is the characterisation of the Argentine Tango. So if people want to think that, then great, but we’re just doing our job and she did a great job."

However, it wasn't the first time Strictly viewers had suspected there was something more to their relationship as a couple of weeks earlier, Widdrington's mic picked up him telling Odudu "I love you" at the end of their routine.

A week earlier, Adam Peaty and Katya Jones had also started rumours with their equally passionate Argentine Tango, which ended in an "almost kiss", too.

Swimmer Peaty's partner made a TikTok video mocking the controversy, while he strongly denied there was anything going on with Jones, warning of the "real-life consequences" of gossip.

Odudu and Widdrington are set to perform a romantic Viennese Waltz in this weekend's Halloween-themed Strictly show.
