The World Health Organization delivered 15 ventilators to Gaza hospitals on Sunday amid a spike in COVID-19 infections that has tested the Palestinian territory's under-developed health system. The donation of the intensive care devices, funded by Kuwait, came a week after local and international public health advisers said hospitals in the enclave could soon become overwhelmed. "These devices will help medical teams provide better service to patients, but it is not enough," said Abdullatif Alhaj of Gaza's health ministry.

A team of animal experts began the task on Sunday of airlifting Pakistan's lonely elephant Kaavan on the long journey to his new home at a sanctuary in northwestern Cambodia, marking the culmination of years of campaigning by American singer Cher. Cher, who has written songs calling for Kaavan to be rescued from his grim and lonely conditions at Islamabad Zoo, is due to meet the elephant upon its arrival in Cambodia after she spent the last few days with him in Islamabad. On Sunday morning, dozens of wildlife workers and experts led by animal rescue organisation Four Paws used a winch and rope to pull the sedated elephant into a custom-designed crate in which he will be transported to the Cambodian city of Siem Reap.
More than 10,000 turkeys are set to be culled at a farm in North Yorkshire in an effort to contain an outbreak of Avian influenza, the Government has confirmed. A 3km and 10km “temporary control zone” has been imposed around a turkey fattening premises near Northallerton, after a highly pathogenic strain of H5N8 was detected on Saturday. The strain has recently been identified on several farms in Europe and led to the culling of more than 13,000 chickens in Cheshire earlier this month, but poses little risk to human health or food safety. According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) H5N8 has also been identified in wild birds in Gloucestershire, Devon, Dorset, Lancashire and Lincolnshire, with reports last week that swans had been found spinning in circles and discharging blood from their nostrils. Christine Middlemiss, England's Chief Veterinary Officer, said on Sunday that “immediate steps have been taken to limit the risk of the disease spreading” in North Yorkshire, the source of which remains unclear. She added that all 10,500 birds at the farm will be humanely culled. Defra has said it does not anticipate any impact on the supplies of turkeys or other birds in the lead up to Christmas. “Bird keepers should remain alert for any signs of disease, report suspected disease immediately and ensure they are maintaining good biosecurity on their premises,” Prof Middlemiss said. “We are urgently looking for any evidence of disease spread associated with this farm to control and eliminate it.” The H5N8 flu influenza virus is highly pathogenic – meaning that it leads to more severe disease rather than it being more easily transmissible – and the number of outbreaks has increased in recent years. The last epidemic hit 29 European countries in 2016-17, including the UK, and led to the culling of millions of poultry across the continent. In Germany alone 900,000 birds were killed. But there is currently no evidence that the virus is a threat to humans. “To date the World Health Organisation has never confirmed any cases of H5N8 in humans and the risk to the public is considered very low,” said Dr Gavin Dabrera, Consultant in Acute Respiratory Infections at Public Health England. A Food Standards Agency spokesperson added that properly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, remain safe to eat. Dr Holly Shelton, an expert in influenza viruses at the Pirbright Institute, told the Telegraph last week that “there are no characteristics in H5N8 that give us cause for concern that it might jump from person to person”. “But we still have to treat the viruses with care as the likelihood of them adapting will increase if they make small jumps into individuals,” she added. The latest outbreak comes after Defra declared an avian influenza prevention zone across England, Scotland and Wales earlier this month, meaning it is now a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures. Anyone with more than 500 birds must restrict access to their site and ensure that vehicles, footwear and clothing are disinfected regularly. "This is a very significant week, the last real major week subject to any further postponement," Raab told the BBC. He said negotiations were down to their final two basic issues and a deal was possible if the EU showed some pragmatism. Face-to-face negotiations between Britain and the European Union over a trade deal restarted on Saturday (November 28) as the two sides make a last ditch attempt to reach an agreement with just five weeks to go before their current relationship ends. EU negotiator Michel Barnier arrived in London on Saturday morning and said talks to find a deal with Britain were continuing into Sunday (November 29).

Tobermory is a small harbour tucked into the shore of Lake Huron's massive and beautiful Georgian Bay. Mare than 20 historic shipwrecks from a long ago time lay on the bottom, inviting adventurous scuba divers to venture beneath the waves to explore them. Wooden steamships with massive boilers that propelled them over the lakes with their cargo were once commonly used to deliver food, building materials, and other products between cities and even between Canada and the United States of America. The five Great Lakes are among the largest bodies of fresh water in the world, created during the ice age when glaciers carved paths and left rivers and lakes behind when they melted. Lake Huron is situated on the Canada/U.S. border and it's northern shore is Georgian Bay, almost as large as the rest of the lake itself. The tiny, but picturesque town of Tobermory is a popular place to visit, especially for those who seek an opportunity to scuba dive in cold, but crystal clear conditions. The visibility is a blessing because there is a lot to see near Tobermory. This is where marine Fathom Five National Marine Park is located. Famous for the Flowerpot Island with it's unique structures towering high above the shore, land adventurers also flock to the area for sightseeing and pictures. The 420 million year old dolomite has been worn by the weather and waves to create mysterious caves and structures both above and beneath the water. But Fathom Five holds the allure that brings scuba divers from around the world to visit more than 20 old wrecks that have been surprisingly well preserved in the icy depths. Wooden beams, rudders, boilers and ship hardware are on the lake's bottom, just as they were when the wrecks came to rest after their destruction. A few of the wrecks have actually been placed intentionally to create interesting dive sites for exploration. Such is the case with this ship, the Caroline Rose which was built in the 1940s in Nova Scotia, Canada. Originally sunk by mishap, it was towed to its current location to make it accessible for scuba enthusiasts. A trip to Tobermory holds something for everyone. Summer scuba diving events are held by Float n' Flag Dive Centre in Burlington for those looking to investigate this area and the wonders it holds.
